Tahoe Trampers was formed by ten women in 1976.  The goal was to create a voluntary recreational hiking and social group where members could enjoy the Lake Tahoe region and its many trails.  In the early years, dues were only $1 and hikes were scheduled for July, August and September.  Car pools were encouraged and riders would pay drivers $1 to help pay for fuel.

As the membership grew, the number of hikers on each hike became larger.  Since hiker abilities varied, the hikers mimiced the universal ski level concept of breaking hikes into easy (green), moderate (blue) and difficult (black) groups evolved.  A group of regular hike leaders was formed to create the annual schedule and create rules for hike safety.  Their coveted collection of hikes from which to choose became quite large although many favorites were repeated annually.  Hike leaders regularly previewed the scheduled hikes a week or so before scheduled to prevent "surprises" and changing hike conditions.  Tailgate parties after each hike were popular and at the end of the season, a dinner was shared at Aspen Grove in Incline Village.   Word spread quickly about the quality of hike organization and its comradery.   Members were added from around the North Tahoe area but total membership had to be limited so as to keep the size of hikes reasonable.

In addition to enjoying the great outdoors, our members are also committed to improving our hiking trails.  Part of our annual dues goes towards support of non-profit trail and forestry associations such as the Tahoe Rim Trail.  IVGID and Washoe County have both recognized the Tahoe Trampers as a wonderful health and wellness organization for seniors.  Several charter members who joined 40 years ago are still active and many Trampers have been members for over 20 years.   Collectively, the Trampers have logged well over a million miles of hikes which is enough to hike twice from the earth to the moon and back again.  It's no wonder that today there is a waitlist to join.
